Fine Motor Development for Children with Autism

My students need 18 fine motor development skills games and cognitive development activities.

My children with autism have the ability to learn but they need new tools. Our school only houses special education classes. I teach six children with autism who are non-verbal ranging from kindergarten to 3rd grade. Because of our population that we serve and teach we are a hard to staff school in New York.

My students have difficulty with their fine motor skills such as holding scissors, coloring, and grasping things. As a result, I have made activities that involve the students interest as well as developing their fine motor skills. One of the activities that they enjoy is putting hair rollers together and apart. Another activity that the students work on involves putting little koosh balls into a hole cut out of a plastic Tupperware top.

I have made many fine motor skills games using everyday household items and things that I have purchased on my own. There are many more games that I can purchase to develop their fine motor skills even further. However, the district that I work for has had budget cuts and we have only received $150 for supplies for the year. It is only October and I have already spent that money and a good amount of my own. It is important to empower these children and to provide them with the best activities possible.
