My students need balsa wood, miniature mitre boxes with saws, wood glue, pins, foam board, and doll house hardware.

Everyone Deserves a Home of Their Own! I teach Architectural Drafting. My students are in grades 10-12. They come from middle to lower income families. All are currently working toward completing a vocational career pathway in Construction Technology systems.
First Time Home Owners! We are a rural community where most job opportunities lie in food service and construction. Students that cannot afford college have limited employability skills. They can start as a laborer doing construction or flip burgers. My students learn better through hands-on activities. I believe that designing and then building a model home will help them retain more course content as well as help them become better consumers in the future when they may go house hunting.
My students will be faced with a problem to solve. They will research and design low income housing solutions for single and multiple families in the community. Then they will be required to build a model of one of the houses they design. The models will consist of framing as well as some exterior and interior finishing. Students will have the option to completely finish up to 75% of the house. The remaining 25% must illustrate construction principles. Students will be required to create a budget and keep track of all proposed costs of building. They will also have to research additional costs that originate from permits, inspections, foundations, land clearing, etc. My students need materials to build scale models of homes they design in the class. They need balsa wood, mitre saws, and foamcore. The finished models will be displayed at the local mall for parents, teachers, community members, employers, and other students.
Your support for this project will help my students have better knowledge retention of course competencies, make more informed decisions about buying a house, and open up career options that would not otherwise exist.
