As I look back at my life, I can only remember a handful of my past teachers. Within that handful, they are either imprinted into my memory because they were not my cup of tea, or...because they taught in such a way that engaged my attention and made me feel special. Those teachers kept me going and that is exactly what I hope to do for my students.

I teach at a 3-5 intermediate Title I school. We have a high transient population as well as many Russian bilingual students. Many students in my area struggle with academics and are frequently absent. One of my goals is to create a classroom environment that is warm, inviting, and engaging. My hope is that this will encourage students to want to be in school.

I frequently use music in my classroom. I find that, depending on the style, music can be used for relaxation, transitions, educational games, or even to learn something such as multiplication. Music is just one of the things I use to create an engaging yet supportive learning environment. In the past I have purchased CDs and they are currently stacked in my classroom. However, they take up too much space and many have become scratched and unusable.

My main goal is to use the iPod to play music in the classroom, which I have found very effective in creating a welcoming classroom environment. However, I am also planning on occasionally downloading children's audio books and educational programs. I hope that I am one of those teachers my students remember for years to come and that the small things I incorporate into my teaching - such as music and technology - will make a difference.
