Honk! Screech! Creak! Ding! Squeak! Varoom! Tweet! The sounds my 27 low-income third graders encounter in their daily lives vary significantly. These curious scientists are brilliant learners who can master high-level science content when it is properly scaffolded. Many of my students are English Language Learners who need hands-on experiences in order to access higher level science content.

Third graders are expected to learn about sound through their science instruction. Despite the constant sounds my students encounter through city life, they have little understanding of where sound comes from and many misconceptions. I want to provide my students with hands-on, inquiry based science lessons that help them build their own understandings about sound. However, I lack many of the materials I need to help my students gain this knowledge.

I am requesting a variety of materials that will be used for investigations and experiments to help us learn more about sound. Different types of bells, whistles, and tuning forks will help us discover pitch. Jump ropes and slinkies will allow us to discover the shape and length of sound waves. Blank tapes will allow us to create our own sound effect tracks, similar to those in movies. A drum will let us see vibrations for ourselves! Rhythm sticks will expose our creative side by letting us create our own rhythms. I'm also requesting 9 books on sound, hearing and music that will let students explore our science topic deeper through reading. These hands-on investigations, supplemented by non-fiction reading materials, will help my students gain the deep understanding of sound that they need to succeed.

Your help will ensure that my students receive the "sound" science instruction that they deserve. Their hands-on experiences with the materials you provide will cement their learning for life!
