The Art of Living: How to Play the Hand We are Dealt

My students need 15 copies of "The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch/Jeff Zaslow.

Mrs. Lind Saltsburg Middle High School
Saltsburg, PA Grades 9-12

I teach Family and Consumer Sciences Education to 7th through 12th graders at a rural middle-high school. I feel that financial poverty is secondary to the emotional poverty that many of the students in my classes face. Although I cannot undo the circumstances they may face outside of school, I am constantly seeking opportunities to guide them toward promising futures.

My daily frustration is wanting more for students than they want for themselves. I openly share with them my own personal story of overcoming childhood poverty and enormous family dysfunction and am constantly aware of my ability to be a role model through my actions. I have found it difficult to locate appropriate high school curriculum dealing with the subject of death. Aside from the technical information of loss and grief, the invincible nature of students makes it difficult to "put a face" on this sensitive subject.

Randy Pausch has "put a face" on this difficult life passage in his inspirational book, "The Last Lecture." Furthermore, he has magnificently turned the death process into life lessons and has inspired individuals to LIVE stating, "We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand." His decision to choose to LIVE while he was inevitably dying will encourage students to focus on their own lives and explore possibilities through chapters addressing "achieving childhood dreams," "enabling the dreams of others," and "how to live your life." I believe that Randy's story can have a positive impact on the lives of my students. We will be able to perform writing assignments, class discussions, and utilize critical thinking skills to complete personal mission statements in my Independent and Family Living course. Randy's story will serve as a real-life example of how to attain a life well-lived regardless of the obstacles we face.

Your support of this project will allow me to address the art of living through the topic of death. Family and Consumer Sciences offers a wonderful canvas upon which your donation and my commitment to teaching will provide the valuable tools for students to paint positive futures.
