Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our school is just starting out. We are in a large city and serve a population that has very few options for the type of education that their children receive. Our goal is to create a curriculum tailored to the interests of both students and parents, and to reach out to the local community as much as possible.

We have created a program at the school called Urban Workshop. It provides a unique opportunity for high school students: rigorous academic exploration centered around community construction projects. This past semester, we built a shelter and rainwater collection system for a community garden, shelving for a local recycling center, and furniture for an outdoor museum installation.

Academic learning in math, science and writing are integrated into the projects through planning, presenting, building and reflection. Your donation will provide organizational supplies that will enable students to integrate academic learning and activities into construction projects on-site. Your donation will provide a "storage clipboard" for each student and a label printer for the whole group. When students need to refer to essential documents on a loose sheet of paper while working on a construction site (which is often), they can keep the paper on the front of the clipboard, where it will not blow away, get stepped, or get crumpled. When students are packing up the site for the day, they can safely file away their documents (as well as their writing utensils) inside the clipboard's inner compartment, and use customized labels to organize all their tools and equipment. When they return to their project the next day, they will be able to access their documents and their writing utensils as easily as they can locate a hammer or a drill bit. As a result, students will be able to create, utilize, and organize their blueprints, calculations and other information on the site.

Your donation will do more. The students will learn about proportion and scale, measurement, algebra and geometry. It is an opportunity for them to view math as a part of the world outside the classroom, which can impact their learning for the rest of their lives.
