The jump from understanding the real environment to decoding representations on maps is tough for first graders.

I take my children on many walking field trips. We hit all of the traditional stops including the post office, the courthouse, and the fire house. This year we will visit the brand new public library. Sometimes we go much farther from home to see a play or visit a planetarium. Unfortunately, by the time we get back to the classroom, most of my students don't express a solid understanding of where we went and the details of what we saw are clouded by interactions with friends on the return trip.

With a few basic tools, I can enrich our field trips. My students will be empowered to actively participate as navigators and reporters. Small audio recorders will be used to note specific vocabulary as well as sounds unique to the location. Magnetic Compasses, combined with simple maps that we make together, will help us decide which direction we are going and how we will get to our destination and back to school. I will give the students orientation using Google Earth. When we return students will review the tape recorded vocabulary and sounds, along with the route noted on the map. They will combine visual representations with written work to create musical expressions of their experience.
