Mrs. Anderson's classroom raised $402

(Organized) Musical Chairs

My students need 30 seat sacks to organize classroom materials for music class. They need 15 clipboards to write on. They also need a raised director's chair to be able to see my hands.

I teach music to 350 K-5 students at a Title I school in a large urban school district. The school does not have a PTA. All financial school resources are directed only towards the subjects of math and reading.

My students learn all aspects of music: listening, moving, playing, history, singing, reading and writing!!! In order for my students to write music, they need a flat work surface. We sit in chairs in the music classroom, no desks. I provide a few clipboards and pencils for the students on the days we do writing assignments. I don't have enough clipboards for all of the students, so they sometimes have to use heavier, bulkier textbooks to write on. They place the clipboards or books under their seats until time for use. Many times they accidentally kick or slide the clipboards on the floor making horrible, disruptive noises. Students also have to divide up into different groups for activities, such as instrument playing, round singing, group composing, etc. I need a fast and efficient way to divide the students quickly, since time is so limited. Due to health reasons, I teach from a chair at the front of the room. Many times we use our hands for different rhythm activities, including patting the lap, clapping, snapping, etc. We also use our hands for the Curwen hand signs for scale singing. It's difficult for students to see my motions when I'm seated at the front.

Seat sacks are cloth seat covers that have a pocket on the back to store books, papers, pencils, etc. The seat sacks are great for two different purposes. They will keep the clipboards off of the floor, from being kicked around and disruptive. And, I can place numbers, shapes and colors (iron on fabric!!) to identify the seats. When I need 3 groups for an activity, I call out "squares, triangles, circles". When I need 2 groups, I call out "red and blue". I can also direct students to specific numbered seats when changing my seating chart. I need 15 clipboards so I'll have enough clipboards for all of the students. The director's chair places the teacher at the perfect height for the students to observe motions and handsigns. Students learn by observing, but the back row students often have problems seeing me when I'm seated at the same level they are at. Also, many of the rhythm activities involve my lap, and my lap goes away when I stand!!

You will be helping my students to organize their supplies for the music class, to break out into different groups, to have a writing surface for writing assignments and to see my physical examples from the front of the class.
