Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an art teacher that is teaching in the elementary school that I attended as a child. I wanted to return to where I was inspired to teach art to give my students an opportunity to enrich their lives by providing a rigorous aesthetic education experience. I teach grades K-5 in a high-need community. I know many of my students in my class that live in the City Housing Authority (Projects) across the street from the school. I grew up living in the Projects and know first hand how dangerous is to live there; violence and drugs are the norm. Regardless, of the environment my students love art, they love expressing themselves, creating, and learning about different artists. They are proud and exhibit their pride through their artwork. My students’ self-esteem improves every time they share with a smile what they have created. I had a third grade student that made a paper-mâché rabbit with big eyes and long ears. I saw this young boy’s attitude change as he completed his project, from an insecure, doubtful little boy, to a confident and proud student. He showed his little grey and white rabbit to his five year old brother and even insisted in showing it to the school principal. I had another student, a fourth grader that created a rendition of Jacob Lawrence “Self-Portrait”, that was submitted to the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators, for the possibility of future publications. I want to expose my students to more artist work, to visit online art museums when the lack of funds prevents numerous amounts of students to visit. I want to have the chance to give my students PowerPoint presentations about a new topic and to show them videos on different artists. I want my children to create an online website about their artwork and give them an opportunity to view their finished project. With your help in purchasing an LCD projector it will ensure that my students are provided with an enrich aesthetic education in the arts by allowing them to broaden their minds by viewing and experiencing other artists, visit online museums, and view how technology can be incorporated in the arts through PowerPoint presentations. I have high expectations for my students and I believe that technology plays such an important role in today’s society, I don’t want my students to miss out on this experience, and with your help they won’t.
