I teach Algebra at a Title I middle school. The students I teacher are 8th graders, who are required to take Algebra no matter their skill level.

Our district was lucky enough to get a grant several years ago that got our 7th-8th teachers class sets of graphing calculators. Unfortunately these calculators need batteries to keep running. My students enjoy playing the individual algebra games on the calculators. They also love doing projects that involve the calculators. We were also lucky enough at our school to one year order a CPS (Classroom Performance System) that uses clickers for the students to enter answers and get instant feed back. These also require batteries. My student love playing "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Review" using these clickers. The calculators and clickers contribute to students having a more individualized experience with the Math. This is important when dealing with the varying skill levels.

We need batteries (a lot of AAA batteries). All the calculators and clickers need to have their batteries replaced. Some have already died. Unfortunately it is very difficult to replace close to 250 batteries.

The only way my students will be able to continue using the graphing calculators and the clickers is by the generosity of donors. With out this support the students will have to deal with more mundane forms of practice which do not encourage their participation. Please keep the enthusiasm going in my Algebra classes.
