I teach third grade (obviously) at a public school which houses a diverse community of kids. In any given classroom you will find kids who speak English as their second language, kids who are part of our Special Education program, kids with learning disabilities, kids who are part of our gifted program, and kids who are considered to be part of our regular education program. You know what ALL these kids have in common? They all want to learn and have FUN while doing it.

Whatever the population of my classroom turns out to be, I can guarantee that a few things WILL occur, especially in the area of literacy: 1. All of the kids will want to have fun with the books we read in class. 2. Some kids will have already decided that they do not like reading. 3. There will not be enough books in my classroom to provide the literature-rich environment that kids NEED to develop a love and understanding of reading. As a teacher, I can vouch for the fact that if my students are bored, I'm in for a lot of problems! If my kids are not engaged in what they are reading, they will tune out completely. NOT GOOD! Couple this with the fact that some of my kids have already decided that they don't like reading and we've got a recipe for disaster. As a teacher it is my job to fight for these kids' rights to be a reader and to ENJOY reading too! But if I don't have the tools I need to fight this battle, well, you can see how this fight will end. . .

I have part of a solution to my first 2 problems. Graphic Novels. Graphic novels are set up similarly to comic books, but they tell a complete story (much like chapter books) and are supported with colorful, action packed pictures. These are novels that have been proven to turn some of the most reluctant readers around! They are fun, they grab kids' attention and keep them interested in what they're reading! And luckily, graphic novels have come a LONG way from the regular comic books I knew as a kid. Graphic novels (the good ones!) are extremely well written and tell wonderfully complex stories that lend themselves to the classroom beautifully! What else? Well, graphic novels can connect multiple subject areas like science and social studies. So my room can be reading in ALL areas! Still not convinced? Here are some facts about using graphic novels in the classroom: 1. They positively affect cognitive growth. 2. Struggling readers are more likely to read graphic novels than other books. 3. Graphic novels make children use critical thinking skills. 4. Graphic novels improve vocabulary and comprehension. So as you can see, I NEED GRAPHIC NOVELS!!!

So, I have a solution that I am confident will help my students grow as readers. What I need YOUR help with is supplying my kids with the books they need. I WISH I could go out and buy all the books that I know would make a difference for my students. But I simply cannot. With your help, you can be the difference between a kid giving up on reading altogether, and a kid discovering that they really DO like reading after all! I know it sounds a bit dramatic, but I KNOW the difference a good book can make in a child's life. You really, truly CAN make a difference. My job as a literacy teacher is to work, work, WORK at getting each and every child to not only understand what they are reading but to ENJOY what they are reading. It is a TOUGH challenge, but it is one that I am willing to take on every single year for each and every child who walks into my room. Please help.
