Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Winston Churchill once stated that “We shape our buildings, thereafter they shape us.” How do we ensure that we are able to shape future generations of engineers to design, craft, and build such buildings if we are unable to provide the resources necessary to capture the imagination of our children? In high-need communities such as ours, the teachers and students struggle to find ways to engineer the future with the resources we have. In a district that relies on Title 1 funds, and in a school where almost 100% of the students qualify for free lunch, giving students the resources to spark an interest in engineering often takes a back seat to larger fiscal issues. Students often find themselves in high school or even college before much consideration is given to the task of deciding what career they might like to have in the future. At the middle school level, we often don’t, or are unable to help pique the interest of students in certain subjects. Training the engineers of tomorrow requires an interest in subjects such as Math, Science, and Technology. Without adequate resources though, this interest in Math, Science, and Technology does not rise to the surface. In our school (a 7th and 8th grade middle school), we are trying to implement a pre-engineering curriculum, but are unable to fully put it into action because necessary basics like decent workspace for all of the students is nowhere to be found. Our technology education classroom consists of a variety of small (and mix-matched) desks that don’t provide the students with a workspace with which to reach for their dreams. We don’t even have enough desks for every student, so some students are forced to work on the floor to complete assignments. One of our biggest wishes is to have science tables and stools so that we can work on our engineering activities. Having science tables will allow us to work as a team, focusing on areas like electrical engineering, structural engineering, 3-D modeling, and even robotics! Inspiration is key to helping our students make wise decisions about their futures. Your help will not only be of assistance our school, but it will also provide inspiration and empower countless children both today and in the future. “Engineering is a great profession. There is the satisfaction of watching a figment of the imagination emerge through the aid of science to a plan on paper. Then it moves to realization in stone or metal or energy. Then it brings homes to men or women. Then it elevates the standard of living and adds to the comforts of life. This is the engineer's high privilege.” –Herbert Hoover
