Take a Closer Look!

My students need a microscope, prepared plant and animal slides, blank slides, a couple of extra microscope bulbs, and sticky slides they can easily use to prepare their own microscope explorations.

Mrs. K. Sequoia Elementary School
Santa Rosa, CA Grades 3-5

Pond scum, mosquito legs, mouse fur, and hair plucked from the Principal's head! That's what we're interested in! I teach third grade students in a northern California public school.

I'm a pretty good improviser and scavenger but there are some materials I haven't found in thrift stores or garage sales. One of those items is a microscope. I enjoy engaging my students with hands-on activities, especially in Science. If I had a microscope in my classroom it would offer on-the-spot opportunities for wonder and learning. Let's face it... kids are shorter. They're closer to the ground than adults which means they tend to spot little things and drag them back into the classroom to show their teacher and friends (on a regular basis). I've often wished I had a microscope handy to show the minute details of what they've found.

If I had a microscope, I could take advantage of all those teachable moments, and encourage students to slow down and look for details in the world around them. To do this I need a microscope, a few prepared slides and a slide box, and blank slides for the students to investigate their own findings.

Seriously, have you ever studied your own hair, the markings on a butterfly wing, or pollen from a flower? They are amazing to view under a microscope! Your donation will fuel my students' curiosity and empower them to look carefully and build their own projects of investigation. Help nourish our budding researchers!
