My students need materials to use in an interactive listening center during Dibels intervention time including a listening center, the Listen & Learn Word Family Activity Program, a stamp and write sight words kit, and a phonemic awareness learning center kit.

The idea for my project is to create an interactive listening center using the "Listen and Learn Activity Program" to engage the above level students during Dibels intervention time. I teach kindergarten in a high poverty community where most educational programs are geared for the children who are struggling. We are fortunate to have these programs in place, but are falling short in the area of teaching those children who above average. These are the children who we call the benchmark students in our Dibels program. By using the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS), we are able to regularly monitor the development of pre-reading and early reading skills. Our students are grouped according to the intensity of deficit. Those students who benchmark at the beginning of the year do not receive interventions. The students are divided into three groups; intensive, strategic, and benchmark. While the teacher is working with the group needing intensive intervention, a paraprofessional is working with the strategic group. The benchmark students must work on their own during this time with activities related to the concepts being covered. Therein lies the problem. Some of the benchmark students begin to fall behind because there is no direct instruction for them during this thirty minutes each day. Kindergarten children do not work independently very well. The idea for my project is to purchase materials for the benchmark group that would keep them engaged and structured during the intervention period. This interactive listening center would provide independent activities related to phonemic awareness concepts. I would like to purchase the Listen and Learn Activity Programs available through Lakeshore Learning Company. With your help, the "brighter" students will have the chance to learn independence, time management, and cooperation, while learning phonemic awareness and pre-reading skills. Instead of boring worksheets, students will be able to use hands on materials that will excite their senses and motivate them to "Dibel Dabble" in Reading!
