CSI Students Analyze Drugs and Poisons

Both my Forensics and Chemistry students need a Discovery Channel Forensics set, a kit of simulated drug and poison for analysis, and a forensic resource CD.

I teach high school chemistry in an inner city school with a diverse population of students. I teach first year Chemistry, Advanced Placement chemistry and a Chemistry-based Forensics class.

The students I teach have a wide range of academic and hands-on experiences with real-life situations. By providing them with more applicable life-related activities and supplies, they will be able to raise their interest and ability levels in the sciences. Currently, I do not have simulated drugs and poisons in my room. Once I have the kit supplies, I should be able to find less expensive replacements. The way the kits are set up allow for teachers to spend valuable time actually teaching the students about drugs using printouts from the SBI. I am able to show them how certain compounds often involved in crimes are identified in the lab with more sophisticated spectroscopic analysis. I only have paper images, no simulated drug substances. So with new supplies, the students will get a better idea of how the work is actually done in a crime laboratory.

My Forensics and Chemistry students will greatly benefit by using and observing real life related chemistry activities, such as analyzing simulated poisons and drugs with different crime scenarios. These supplemental materials will help them to be more successful in both my lab-centered inquiry Forensics and Chemistry classes. By providing these materials, students can participate in one type of crime solving which simulates a forensics laboratory setting in which students analyze unknown chemicals to determine if a drug or poison is present at the crime scene which matches that found at the person of interest's house, car or their clothes.

Your donations will help more of these students to be better prepared for college level classes in all the sciences and possible employment opportunities with their actual laboratory experiences in these classes. By providing all students with these materials, all will be treated equitably in the classroom. Thank you so much for your consideration of this proposal.
