They're all ears! Middle school students are tapped into the language of music - you can tell by the way they memorize the lyrics to their favorite songs. By setting up an audio station for students to listen to interviews, podcasts, radio shows and especially authors reading and speaking about their work, students will build their vocabulary and find a place within the literary community. Research has shown that fluent readers not only picture what they read but they often hear it as well. Listening is a key component of literacy, especially for struggling readers. My eighth graders need to hear diverse and highly literate speakers and readers in order to improve their fluency and expand their frames of reference.

Students are accustomed to dog-eared books and non-fiction texts that are either flat or too difficult for them to read on their own. With ipods and transcripts, students will be able to access interviews, dramatic readings, and rich dialogue that will improve their cultural literacy. Many of my students don't have the means to compete with kids who have access to computers, ipods, and the equipment that fosters technical literacy.

Itunes provides countless podcasts, audio books, spoken word, poetry, and interviews that will inspire my students to pursue their interests and broaden their scope of knowledge. Because struggling readers are often interested in complex issues but don't currently have the skills to read the associated literature, they are left feeling frustrated and dissatisfied by reading. Ipods will allow them to listen to material as they read along with the text and open their minds to information that they can respond to in formal writing and speaking exercises.

You will make it possible for my students to delve into the issues and interests that inspire them to learn. A crucial aspect of literacy is being able to understand and interpret not only what one reads but what one hears. Ipods will allow me to download information that will appeal to each student and to update it as needed. I've been using my own ipod to play recordings of poets reading their poetry, authors reading short stories, and intellectuals discussing current issues. The presence of these diverse voices in the classroom has a palpable and lasting effect on student interest and enthusiasm. You will make it possible for my students to become aware of the plethora of diverse and articulate voices that inspire them to become highly literate and successful adults.
