Composition Journals Needed!

My students need composition journals.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Language Arts, seventh grade classes. Having a composition journal is a vital part of our class. Students write journal entries in the front and take notes on grammar and sentence diagramming in the back. By the end of the year, many of my students' writings have "met up" in the middle of the journal! I tell them that their journal is "gold" and many of my former students have told me how helpful their journal became in their future classes. I chose composition journals because the students do not tear out papers -- everything is always in one place.

Every year for the last three years, I have required that my students purchase a composition journal for my Language Arts class. Every year, at least twenty of my students cannot buy one and I end up buying them myself and charging them a dollar each in class ( I always lose money on the deal). I would like to be able to just give these students a journal, without charging them. What is incredibly exciting to me as a teacher, however, is when my students fill a journal completely and need a new one. So many of my students do accomplish this by mid-year that I would also like to give these students a new journal. Imagine how rewarding it feels for a student to fill up an entire journal with notes, entries and free-writes! You should see the smiles of satisfaction and surprise when they tell me they're done!

Being able to provide a composition journal to my students who need one is something I have really wanted to be able to do. My students will be so appreciative and it always motivates them to write a lot! I have seen it happen when I have been able to give a student a journal; they take their gift very seriously!

Please help give my students the gift of their own journal. They truly use it everyday!
