AVID White Boards

My students need 5 dry erase boards.

Ms. W. Jesse Bethel High School
Vallejo, CA Grades 9-12

I teach a class called AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). AVID is a regular class period scheduled during the school day. It is designed to give motivated, middle performing students (those usually not given priority in the public school system) skills to help them excel in school and college. Elements of the curriculum are teaching organization (through the use of a structured binder), communication (practiced in Socratic Seminars, public speaking, and tutoring sessions), and critical thinking (enforced by the use of Cornell Notes). The students are typically members of an underrepresented group in 4-year universities, the first in their family to go to college, and have special circumstances at home. My students are in the eleventh and twelfth grades in a school district, city and state that currently has extreme financial problems.

Tutoring sessions are a key part of the AVID curriculum, and are done twice a week. AVID tutoring requires students to practice many survival skills. They work in small groups with an outside facilitator (the tutor) on questions they have developed the night before. One student asks their question at a time (the reporter) and the group asks leading questions to help the reporter come to a conclusion. While they are discussing, the group takes Cornell Notes on the topic. Tutoring sessions require the students to work as a team, much like college study groups, expand their thoughts to ask rather than answer, and organize their thoughts in notes. It also helps them practice their communication and public speaking skills while in a small group setting.

In order to run successful tutoring sessions, the reporting student must be able to write their thoughts out for everyone to see. Math questions play a huge part in the tutoring sessions, and the problems often require quite a bit of work. The writing surface needs to be large enough to write problems comfortably, and easy to erase for the next reporter. White boards are perfect for tutoring sessions because they are sturdy, reusable, and quick to write on and erase.

Your donation of white boards would maximize the success of the tutoring sessions. We would be able to get many more of the students' questions answered due to the ease of the use of white boards, and the boards would be so much more convenient and cost efficient over time. The focus would really be on the students interacting in the tutoring sessions, and not the preparation and set-up behind the tutoring sessions.
