This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Teenagers Need The Arts Too, Even More!
Why is it that our culture nurtures and funds education for young children but once they become teenagers they get forgotten?? At-risk teenagers need the arts more than any other age group because oftentimes it keeps them in school, an opportunity to shine.
My students are primarily from low-income households.
They are full of life and energy, and need avenues for self-expression, now more than ever. We don't have hardly any funding for arts projects here, and have not for years now, so my students are disadvantaged in that they are not getting the well-rounded education that they deserve.
My Project
The students will be integrating arts with language arts for this project. The objective of the learning activity will be for them to create a character. Visually they can create any kind of character they want, and a sculpture allows them to be even more creative with the character traits that they can attribute to their individual sculpture projects.
Donations to this project will provide hours of fulfilling creative activity for almost 200 kids.
They will be creating a sculpture that, by the sturdy nature of its materials, will be able to be displayed in their homes or art galleries.
They will be able to express themselves and create a character with character traits, and doing this visually will help them to understand the more abstract concepts of character development.
