Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a preschool classroom of children with a diagnosis of Autism. They are a group of children who struggle with communication, social skills and sensory integration issues.

I brought my digital camera in for the end of the year party, and my students were so excited to see the camera. They wanted to look at the pictures I took, and when I gave them a chance to use the camera themselves, they were so engaged. I heard more language and excitement from them than ever before. Since that day, I have brought my camera in for summer school, with the same connections, we have let the students take pictures, print them out, and let them tell us about them. We record their thoughts in print and have made a picture book. It is the most popular book in the Library area.

My students need to have access to the camera. I can use it as a motivational tool, a communication tool and for self-expression. I can't bring my camera in everyday, my family also requires it, but my students have expressed loud and clear, this is a tool that can help them overcome difficulties and learn valuable skills.

You can make the difference in their lives. Let them tell their story through the lens of a camera. It will be amazing and beneficial to all. They have so much to say, and the cameras will make it possible.
