Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

New Levels of Technology Needed for Inner City youth!! Animo Leadership Charter high school was created six years ago as an experiment in public education. It is the flagship school of the Green Dot public schools. Its mission is to develop Black and Latino leadership for this underserved and isolated community and to demonstrate the ability and potential of these youth to attend college. From our first few graduating classes, 98% of the students graduated and 93% went on to 2-year or 4-year universities. They are now beginning to graduate with their BA and BS degrees and the results are thoroughly rewarding. This HS graduation rate is significantly higher than any other public high school in inner city Los Angeles and reflects the enthusiasm of the administration, teachers and staff and the support by parents to help us make our mission a reality.

Admission is an open lottery for all students, unlike other charter schools that hand pick 9th grade entrants. We are a Title I school with 97.8% receiving free breakfast and lunch. We have recently succeeded in providing healthful snacks and organic lunches to complement the academic achievements we are making.

One of the reasons for our success is our focus on smaller class sizes, individualized attention to students’ academic success and promoting the use and understanding of new technology. We are propelling Black and Latino youth into science and medical fields and future professions. I am fortunate enough to teach quite possibly the only Marine Biology and Physio-anatomy program in an inner city Los Angeles school. I teach 120 seniors Physio-anatomy and 30 honors marine biology seniors. Our goal is to excite Black and Latino youth about science. This approach will help rectify the lack of minority youth in the sciences, both academic and vocational. We have formed a partnership with the marine studies programs at USC and UCLA to assist us in this effort, and we field teams for the National Oceans Science Bowl and the USC QuikScience competition. This year we won second place and I took 35 students to the USC Wrigley Marine Science center on Catalina Island for three days of hardcore science, college lectures, labs and recreational activities. We carry out abroad based educational campaign on safe fish consumption reaching thousands in the Spanish-speaking community.

With an Overhead Opaque Projector, teaching and technology will be dramatically and qualitatively upgraded. Students will be able to teach each other through a cooperative effort of research and presentation. Likewise, this teacher will be able to present the most innovative biology, marine biology and Physio-anatomy to the students by making available overhead projections of human anatomical structures and perform real-time assessments and lab practicums. Our school and community would be thrilled if you would consider helping us order this projector. We just lack the money because science budgets are minimal. Thank you so much! You can make a difference community by community!
