Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 30 first grade students in a special needs school in Illinois. Most of my students receive free lunch. My beautiful students love to come to school each day and learn everything that they can so that they will be able to make a difference when they grow up.

My students have not had an opportunity to learn about students in our area who live close by and speak a difference language. They want to learn about China. If they were able to learn ribbon dancing from Ms. Ling Ling, this would be a very good introduction into our unit about the culture in China.

We will study about China and write an opera that involves music and dance. The dance that the students wish to learn is the ribbon dance followed by the lion dance. We need Ms. Ling Ling, who has lived in China, but now teaches dancing in Chinatown. She would be able to introduce my students to the world of dance Chinese style.

There are many benefits for students who learn ribbon dancing. Dancing improves balance and strengthen muscles. Exercise will boost my student's metabolism. My students will become healthier and smarter as they learn about ancient Chinese customs. They will write stories about the ribbon dance and we will perform a Chinese opera on stage for our student body, parents and faculty. I want this instruction for my students so that they will learn about a different culture early in life. When students are taught about different cultures early in life, it is easier to absorb. They will find out that the two cultures are more alike than they are different. Our children are our future and we want to make every effort to expand their knowledge so that they will grow up to be responsible citizens.
