I teach an Early Childhood Education class with mixed grade levels of students. Our school is very diverse in population and income levels. Over 25 different countries other than the US are represented in our school and the majority of our students are on free and reduced lunch. My classroom is very diverse as well. In recent years I have had an increased number of Latino students enroll and be very successful.

My students are required to go into the community day cares and schools and work with area children. They are to plan and present developmentally and age appropriate lessons to the children 2-3 times a week for an entire school year. Because of this our program needs lots of supplies and resources for our students to use in planning and presenting. Our school provides some of the basic items needed but many of them are becoming old and outdated and they are limited in their scope. I do not have the money to purchase music and movement equipment and resources for my students to pull from to enhance their learning as well as the learning of the children they are working with. Development of the whole child is critical and right now I feel like we are just focusing on a few of the areas and often ignoring the benefits of music enrichment, physical games that require teamwork and cooperation and multicultural awareness. As you know teens will be attracted to newer and cooler materials. This will attract their attention and build enthusiasm and will get them excited about this critical learning area and increase the likelihood that they will utilize music and movement more in their lesson plans.

I have requested a variety of materials to help solve this problem and to accomplish the goals of my students planning a more well-rounded curriculum. I have requested multicultural CDs and instruments, rhythm instruments so all the kids in the classroom can use one at the same time, books with activity ideas for rhythm instruments and other songs, fingerplays and chants and outdoor items to get kids moving in creative ways that promote teamwork and cooperation. I also requested items that are classics for teaching the kids the basics through songs that are fun and improve cognitive skills as well.

Your help will make it possible for me to provide the resources that my students need to be more effective teachers of young children and even if they do not go into the teaching field this exposure of what and how to plan for young children may help them be better parents one day. Music and movement are powerful teachers of many lessons that children need and it is FUN!
