Teaching students to be teachers is the main focus of my Early Childhood Education class. This is a mixed grade class of students from diverse backgrounds. Our school is an inner city school with students from over 25 different countries and students from many different backgrounds. The majority of our population is on free and reduced lunches.

This is a year long course that requires the students to go out into the community to work with children from toddlerhood to elementary school ages. While they are at the internship location the students are to present a developmentally and age appropriate lesson to their children. The students are responsible for preparing their lessons and gathering the necessary materials to take with them. Our resources for the toddler age group are very limited and it is difficult for teens that are just learning about teaching to develop lessons for this age without ideas and suggestions and some materials to make their lessons come alive and more meaningful.

My goal is to never again hear, "Toddlers can't do anything!". Toddlerhood is a wonderful time and I think with the right tools, such as toddler resource books, toddler books, pictures, music CDs and musical instruments I can hopefully get the point across to them that toddlers can do many, many things and they have the privilege of showing new and wonderful things to this young age group!

With this project you not only help high school students but you are also contributing to the learning of toddlers in our area. My hope is that even if my students do not go into teaching as a career they will at least be better parents someday because of the experiences they have had at the internship site and the knowledge they gain of how children learn and develop. I want to instill in them the importance of books, reading and talking to babies and how this helps children get off to a great start in life and all the learning that is ahead. It all begins in these first few years! We must get this message out.
