Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Perhaps no city has inspired such dark apocalyptic visions in literature as Los Angeles, and no writer has captured those visions more vividly than Ocatavia Butler. I would like to integrate her novel "The Parable of the Sower" into a tenth grade unit I teach on utopia/dystopia.

My classes are comprised of mostly African-American and Latino students, and I feel the need to augment the curriculm with multicultural works that engage my students.

Butler's "Parable of the Sower" would bring a unique voice and perspective to our study of utopia/dystopia; she is one of the few African-American women who wrote in the field of science fiction. That is why I am requesting a class set of the novel. My students would find her tale of a cityscape in ruins intriguing and would identify with the teenage protagonist's struggle to survive in the not-too-distant future.

You will make it possible for my students to read and discuss a book that addresses universal issues of race, gender, and politics and will awaken their imagination and enlarge their humanity. We are deeply grateful for your support.
