"Every student needs to learn about the demon under the microscope.
I teach a career pathways class comprised of juniors and seniors. This is a year long class with a half-semester focus on MRSA, the staph that is resistant to antibiotics. I teach at an Expeditionary Learning School, which means that supplemental to our core subjects, we offer courses that expand the students' knowledge beyond the classroom to the community in which we live.
Career Pathways is a new addition to our class offerings and supplies are limited to Internet resources such as labs or news articles. I would like to expand these resources to include The Demon Under the Microscope, to not only satisfy the expectations of an expeditionary learning environment, but to also increase literacy in this subject area.
My students each need a copy of The Demon Under the Microscope to be able to take home and study out of the classroom. This book explains the history of the discovery of the first antibiotic. It will give them a foundation for their studies of the immune system, bacteriology, and antibiotics. It will offer exposure to new types of reading material, and spark their interest in health careers and research.
As a final project for this book, my students, with the help of a community volunteer, will construct posters to inform the public about MRSA and other superbugs. At the request of the director of our local public health clinic, these posters will be displayed in the clinic lobby. In effect, this project will reach many more people than just my students.
Your donation will empower my students to take an active interest in their own health and that of their family and friends not only now, but in years to come. Your donation will provide an increase in the level of literacy, and will also make reading about health careers interesting.
My students need a class set of "The Demon Under the Microscope".

Dear Cash4Books.net, Thomas, Ann, Sisser and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,
Thank you for funding out project. The students will be thrilled to get their own copy of this book. We have had to xerox the chapters and this leaves a lot to desire as far as literacy appreciation with teenagers. They do not like reading books in that format. They are getting a lot out of the book, too. We just finished a segment on the current situation regarding the number of bacterial infections that are non-treatable due to the resistance that we are creating by the misuse of antibacterials. We are reading the book along with our lessons. So again, thank you for your very generous donation and know that you have helped these students understand how important their choices about health contribute to the general health of the public.
Reviewed the project essay and sent follow-up questions if needed.

"I gave to this project because... I taught teens for 30 years and invested a good deal of my own money in order to do the job; so I think this is a great program!"
"I gave to this project because... it's in Oregon; it's in a program named after Linus Pauling, and I have a personal interest in the subject (by that I mean that I wrote the book!)"
