If a picture is worth 1,000 words, how any words would 4 digital cameras be worth? I teach social studies to both 7th and 8th grade at a low-resource school in a high-interest city.

Last spring my students went on a field trip and I supplied disposable cameras for my students. They loved it. Each group had a camera. They took pictures of themselves in front of historical sites, with nature, eating food, pretty much anyway they interacted with their environment. The point is, the cameras made the students more interested in what they were learning about. They wanted to explore more and do more because they were able to document it, interact with it and connect to it.

Why should we only use one camera roll per field trip? My students and I live in an incredible city for history and learning about our environment. Our location is nearly ideal for a social studies class. If we had enough digital cameras, the level of interaction on these field trips would increase dramatically. Students would be more engaged. We could do historical photo hunts of different neighborhoods, landmarks and people. The cameras not only create many more possibilities, they make them more learner friendly. These cameras would be used for much more than just field trips. My class is focused on interactive group work. We do projects all year long. The cameras would provide a way for my students to not only focus on the end result, but document the process it took for them to get there. The digital cameras could allow my students to add personal touches to power point presentations, websites, travel brochures, you name it. Most importantly, it will help provide them with interesting topics to write about. This is an area ALL of my students need to work on. The photos taken will be the inspiration of many essays, stories and informative pieces.

The donation of these cameras would be integral in the education of my students. Interesting and engaging children is the best way to get them to learn. These cameras would not only hook my students, but be a tool that would help create interesting projects, document their journeys and becomes muses for their written work. My students do not walk into school realizing all of the opportunities that are out there for them. Please help them not only see these options, but experience them and provide visual proof.
