Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach technology in a high-achieving low-income middle school in New York. The school was started to offer a safe environment for immigrant students to learn important skills and achieve high results.

iPhones, iPods, video games, the Internet, voice recording, text messaging.... I can't think of anything that motivates students more than technology, other than using that technology to communicate with other kids. There is a reason that over 170 million iPods have been sold to date. iPods are great in so many ways. We usually think of them just as containers for our music, but we can also store pictures, videos, podcasts and other data on them. Podcasts are like mini-radio shows that are created by people and made available for free on the Internet for downloading and listening to. There is an entire world of opportunity that opens up once a class set of iPods are available for students. Consider the connections that students make when they create a podcast, share it with other students, whether those students are in their own class, or in another country, and then receive a podcast in return based on their reactions!

In order to do this project easily and effectively, and also lure in teachers who may not be very tech-savvy, I need 16 iPod Nanos, capable of holding about 8gb of data each, and 16 voice recording iPod adapters. My school has a class size of approximately 30, so this would allow one class at a time to work in partnerships to create a podcast and publish it to the Internet.

By funding my project, you will be helping inner-city students make connections on meaningful academic topics with students their own age in other cities, states, and countries. The digital divide exists and is impacting our city schools, our social structures, and is limiting opportunities for our youth. Your generosity will help bridge that digital divide and provide such an amazing opportunity to students in my school and other schools around the world for many years to come.
