Life for my 6th grade students is vastly different from the life I led in 6th grade. Growing up in an inner-city environment with 90% of them qualifying for free or reduced lunch, most have been forced to become mature beyond their years. Many of them have forgotten what it means to dream or imagine, and I wish so much to give that back to them.

One of the biggest hurdles that I have to overcome as a teacher is the lack of supplies at my school. It is so difficult to expose my students to interesting, high quality literature when the funding is not in place to purchase sets of new books. My students rarely have the opportunity to bring books home to read, which simply breaks my heart.

Genre study is a huge part of the Language Arts curriculum. Fantasy and adventure are two genres that my students must learn in 6th grade, and I've found the perfect book to help to do this. Peter and the Starcatchers is a prequel to the story of Peter Pan, and I think its the perfect type of book for my students. My students spend so much time having to act like adults, when really they need to be able to take some time to enjoy being children. It is my hope that immersing them in a world full of pirates, treasure, and adventure would help to open their imaginations and help them to begin to dream again. I would like to do this using a literature circle with my students as they read the book both independently and as a class.

You will make it possible for each of my students to have copy of the book to read and enjoy, at home and at school. You can help me to encourage my students to read and to imagine again. Hopefully, this experience will be the beginning of many for my students. I hope to teach them to enjoy reading, because honestly many of them don't when they come to me, and to realize the how important it is to dream. To do so is an incredibly powerful thing, and its something that you can help to happen.
