Huge Ideas Hidden in the Microscopic

My students need a set of microscope slides that shows the huge diversity of cells in living things.

I teach 7th grade Life Science at a college prep public charter school in an extremely underserved area of Washington, DC. Our school places a major emphasis on civic engagement and works constantly to remind our students of the power they embrace when they become informed citizens. I see my role in such a school as a preparer of lifelong learners. Most of my students will not grow up to become research scientists or innovative engineers, but they will ALL live in a world where a firm understanding of science will allow them to make better rational decisions.

My students come to me from neighborhoods that give them few options and even fewer opportunities to see the world beyond their sidewalks and stoops, so they have had a particularly difficult time understanding some of the more abstract concepts in Life Science. One of the more challenging concepts for them is the fact that all living things are made up of microscopic cells, and that some living things only need one tiny cell to stay alive. My students marvel at the sheer mention of such an idea, but they have a difficult time grasping it, as they have never seen cells and don't have an occasion to discuss them in their daily lives in their neighborhoods. I think the critical next step in their understanding is for them to be able to explore the unbelievable diversity of life, one cell at a time.

The tried-and-true method of exposing students to a complicated new idea in science is to have them act as investigators. In reporting their findings, they often surprise even themselves with the complexity of their discoveries. Not only is this method more fun for my students, it has also proven to give them a sense of ownership over their education (which is something that most of them report to me to have never experienced in their old schools). The Beginners Biology slide set that I am requesting for my students includes an expertly prepared look at every major type of living thing on Earth and the cells that each one is made of. This slide set will allow them to compare and contrast the cells and tissues of different living things - including the cells that make up human blood, nerves, bones, and skin - for endless hours. The opportunity to investigate these 50 different cells will provide my students the firm foundation that one must have in order to really understand complex topics like DNA, evolution, and abortion that we all face as modern citizens.

With your support, my students will be able to explore the astounding diversity of life that our planet has to offer. By providing these DC kids with access to the endless world of the microscopic, you are opening to them a lifetime of deep understanding of the world around them, bringing them one step closer to being confident, competent, successful adults.
