Listening to Read -- Online Reading

My students need individual headphones to use for reading on the computer in class.

New software is inspiring my students to read! I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade reading disabled students in a variety of settings from a resource classroom, to co-teach classroom with a regular ed and special ed teacher, to mainstreamed students with reading disabilities.

Last October Bookshare.org announced that their Library is Now Free to All U.S. Students with Qualifying Disabilities: Memberships for U.S. schools and qualifying U.S. students of all ages including K-12, post-secondary and adult education, are now free, thanks to special funding from the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP). This resource was wonderful for the students in my classroom last year, but we didn't have the right headphones needed. My students were spending extended time on the computers & the headphones purchased for use by the school were heavy, cumbersome, and hot to wear for any length of time. They are all used to wearing earphones, but those cannot be shared. I talked with our school nurse to discuss options for sterilizing earphones, but there isn't a practical solution that would ensure there is no cross contamination between students.

It would be great if each student had a pair of earphones they could use for reading on the computer. This wonderful software not only provides an audio of the books the students want to read, but it reads it off of the computer and the students watch the words while they are listening to the story -- a proven method for improving reading skills. If the kids had their own earphones to use, in any of their classes, they could utilize this software as more and more books (including textbooks) become available.

Your help will ensure that my students will have their own earphones to use in all of their classes, thereby improving their reading skills without having to share possibly more than just earphones.
