Playaway fever has hit our school! I'm a Library Media Specialist at a 5th and 6th grade Middle School in a suburban/rural Arkansas community. In our school, we have a wide range of reading levels, all of which are served in our Library Media Center.

In an effort to reach struggling readers, I have looked for a way for them to find reading material that is interesting to them that they can read easily. One solution I have found are Playaways. What is a playaway you ask? Playaway is a format of audio or book on tape, combining content with an easy-to-use player all in one small unit. All you have to do is press play to start listening immediately to your favorite book – there is no need for a separate player, because it comes with earbuds and a battery to make it play. Students can bookmark passages in the Playaway to come back to later, and also can change the speed of the voice or pause within a chapter. We currently have these pre-loaded audio books available in our Media Center for students to check out, and boy have they! We currently have 40 Playaways and as soon as one is checked in, it is checked out by another student! Teachers are also using these audio books with literature circles so students who have trouble with reading will be able to read the same book as others in their classes. Students may take these Playaways with them on long bus rides before and after school, or to any noisy environment and be reading!

This project will benefit our students in increased reading comprehension rates, vocabulary development, fluency, and most of all motivation. Audio support enables choice and variety in reading material for struggling readers and permits sharing, collaboration, and a feeling of social support--all identified as principal requisites for motivating young readers. I have students who normally would not check out books clamoring for these! In addition to students using these independently through the library, teachers are using these with their lower level readers through literature circles in their classrooms. Lower level readers can now read the same book as the higher level readers and participate in group discussions. Some teaching strategies that teachers at our school can use with our Playaways are modeled reading, assisted reading, gradual release of responsibility, and differentiated instruction.

Playaways are very durable, and all we should have to replace occasionally are the batteries. Unlike CD’s, these can not be scratched, or part of it can’t be lost. With more Playaways available, we will have more opportunities to engage our students through the library and classrooms. All students can now experience grade level texts with their peers and won’t have to feel that they are behind the rest of the class if they need to listen to a passage again, and can move along at their own pace. These Playaways can be used in our library for many years to come. With your help, students at my school can be well away on their journey to become life long readers.
