I teach a diverse population of enthusiastic fifth graders in a college town. Our school has a wide range of academic, social, and economic variance amongst its students. In my classroom I have students with special needs, high ability learners, and English language learners. Even though we have such a vast range of students each with their own special learning needs, we steadily maintain our status as a four-star school. This great accomplishment, unfortunately, puts us out of the funding loop available to more struggling schools. In my classroom I lack basic supplies needed to push my students to the next level of learning. In particular, we are in need of updated dictionaries to support our word studies. Students are currently using outdated and tattered dictionaries published over twenty years ago. New dictionaries, each with a built-in thesaurus, will enable us to bring our word studying into this decade. Each student deserves to have his or her own dictionary without having to share with classmates. In fact, it is difficult to ensure all students have adequate dictionary use skills if they are consistently working with partners. Dictionaries for each student will assure me each child can use the resource for his or her own needs without relying upon a partner they are forced to share with due to lack of materials. You have the power to put the power of words and language in the hands of my students. Please help me make updated dictionaries available to my word lovers! Thank you!
