Write On! Interactive Technology in Science

My students need a wireless tablet including a stylus.

Students today are constantly "turned on" to technology outside of school. Blogs, iPods, video games, social networking websites, and streaming media are only a few of the many ways that our students interact with technology every day. Often students' technological expertise far outstrips the teacher's! Despite this, teachers are often forced to ask students to "turn off" at school. In a typical classroom, the limited technology is primarily in the teacher's hands. Students are able to see it in action, but not manipulate it themselves. My project proposal would provide a simple and cost-effective solution for this problem by providing students with a powerful wireless tablet tool that would allow them to interact with classroom presentations, input laboratory data, and more. I am a seventh grade science teacher at a year-round public middle school in North Carolina. My curriculum includes many topics that get the students excited about science: weather and atmosphere, force and motion, genetics and inheritance, and the human body. My students are representative of the community as a whole: they are mostly minorities, with a wide variety of cultural, economic, and language backgrounds. Compared to other schools in our area, we have high percentages of both special education and limited-English proficiency students. Like any middle schoolers, my students are instantly interested in any lesson where they get to use technology. Their favorite days are the ones when we go to the school computer lab. My project proposal asks for a wireless tablet that connects via USB to the teacher's computer. This tablet works like a high-tech notebook - a student or teacher writes on the tablet from anywhere in the classroom, and their writing appears on the computer screen and can be projected to the class. This function works with nearly any program, so students can input lab data into a word document table, draw a picture to help them ask or answer questions, or write comments on presentations. Additionally, the tablet can act like a mouse, allowing the teacher or students to roam the room during presentations, rather than being tied to the front of the class. By funding this project, you would be turning average teacher-driven presentations into chances for students to interact with technology which they have likely never seen. You would be allowing the instant creation of class data tables for our frequent labs and activities. And, most importantly, you would be giving students a daily chance to "turn on" in school, which will increase interest in and retention of every lesson. Thank you so much for your consideration of this project!
