My students need 22 videos of the most famous musicals to experience musical theatre.

Teaching in an urban environment is always exciting. I see more than 350 students each week. Every day, I spend my time with kindergarten through fifth grade scholars in music class.

I love teaching music and exposing my students to music from all over the world as well as from all different time periods. Of course, they know the latest hip hop songs, but I want them to know more. I want them to experience the classic children's songs and chants like I did as a student. Even more, I want them to experience music so that I can give to them the joy that I feel with music. One of my favorite experiences from being involved in music as a young student is musical theatre.

When High School Musical and High School Musical 2 came out, my students were enthralled and I knew that musical theatre could grab their attention. But those two movies should not be their only knowledge--there are so many wonderful musicals they should be exposed to! Annie, Oliver, My Fair Lady, Willy Wonka, Phantom of the Opera, Fiddler on the Roof, Cats, Grease, the Lion King, Peter and the Wolf, Joseph, the Wizard of Oz and so many other musicals bring amazing music and songs into the world!

My students do not have the resources to be able to attend shows at a theatre. I try my best to bring experiences to them so that their education takes them beyond their neighborhood surroundings. Please consider helping my students experience musical theatre. Taking part in my high school productions was an experience I won't forget. I still remember most of the songs, lyrics, and dialogue. Musicals are a powerful experience and it's one that I hope I can help my students enjoy!
