In light of our recent economic downturn, children need a firm foundation in the management of time and money! When should this instruction begin? Now...with my first grade classroom located in California. We are a middle-class neighborhood school that provides education to 500 diverse, elementary students.

As the recent housing crisis and economic downturn indicates, our students need the skills to manage their money and understand time now more than ever. They need savvy problem solving skills and knowledge of time and money concepts to make good decisions about loan payments, interest, and other financial matters. In first grade, we are building the foundation for the more complex math that will be necessary to make informed decisions. Money and time are very abstract concepts that require a lot of instruction and practice. Each year, this unit continues to be difficult for my students to understand. This grant would help students get more in-depth instruction and practice with these difficult concepts.

I've procured 2 class sets of beginner wrist watches. I just need some battery power to get them going. Students will wear these watches during class time so we can get familiar with the movement of the hands on the analog clock. Children are intuitively curious about time and these watches make an extra special reminder as they sit handsomely on their wrists. Through this grant, we will have many games to play to practice these difficult concepts in addition to wonderful trade-books to supplement our main math texts. To get children interested in money, we will begin our study by painting our own ceramic piggy banks. Throughout our study, children will be awarded plastic coins to add to their bank. We will discuss budgeting and the importance of allocating funds for savings and donating to worthy causes (like DonorsChoose.org). The culmination of our unit will be for children to purchase items at a classroom store, save some funds for future parties or class purchases, and to donate money to the Heifer Project to buy an animal for a village or family.

Your donation will make it possible for my students to be a part of these engaging and interesting projects. These activities will create a foundation of informed money and time management!
