Teaching TKM and Its Cultural Context

My students need 140 copies of Harper Lees classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird to replace our current copies, which are falling apart.

My Students

"Education is the most powerful weapon that we can use to change the world." -Nelson Mandela To Kill a Mockingbird was a weapon that helped to fuel the Civil Rights Movement, making a remarkable impact on a divided nation. Teaching students this novel arms them with that weapon to help the future.

My students are a group that are thirsty for knowledge.

We come from a rural school where the students often know more about farming than many adults. They are excited about history and about learning, and Harper Lee's novel will help them to connect that love for knowledge with the necessary components of English class. Unfortunately, the school only has around 40 copies of the classic story for the approximately 140 students we serve. I would love to be able to provide each of my students with their own copy to use as we read the novel together.

My Project

My students will be reading the entirety of the novel in conjunction with the Springboard text, therefore exploring the themes and motifs within the novel. They will also be learning about the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s-60s and will be connecting that knowledge to current events.

Just like during the Civil Rights Movement, our nation could be considered to be divided once again over the rights of humans.

I believe that connecting Harper Lee's novel to current civil rights struggles will help students to develop historical context for the setting of the novel while still learning about the history that is being made every day with this current movement.
