Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Time to remodel the kitchen! Mario is serving cold pizza for breakfast and tacos for lunch while Ashley changes the baby and puts her down for a nap. Nearby, Kayla talks on the phone to her cat. The car has broken down and Jeffrey is going to be late for work. Clearly a popular center in our kindergarten room, the dramatic play area takes on a variety of roles but the clear favorite is "playing house". Young children want and need to explore the roles they see around them. Through dramatic play they "try on" these roles and wrestle with relationships and choices in a safe environment. This kind of exploration is one of their primary jobs as young learners with developing imaginations. Most of my students do not have these kinds of toys at home and relish the opportunity to use them at school. While a cardboard box and old blanket can go a long way in the hands of children, I want my students to have the props their theatrical skills deserve. That's where you can help. A child sized stove and sink and doll bed and bedding will provide just those experiences for the cast of characters that come to my classroom each year. These pieces will complement the utensils, plates, dolls, and food we already have. Sometimes the cat might be washed in the sink or maybe the dishes. Perhaps the next "Top Chef" will make a new creation at the stove. Since we have many ELL students in our school the "Home and Grocery" writing boxes will provide an illustrative resource for our youngest writers to improve their blossoming vocabularies. I can just see them writing grocery lists, "To Do" lists of home repairs and reminder notes for their teachers or parents. Your donation will enhance our students' conversation and literacy skills, nurture their social and emotional development and imaginative talents that are so important in early childhood. Thank you so much for your help in remodeling our kitchen and giving our babies a comfortable place to sleep.
