"Malcolm X: A Graphic Biography will inspire my students to read and to invest themselves more in their education and in their own success.
I teach Modern World and American Democracy at a public continuation high school in California. My students have attended at least one, but sometimes three or more, other high schools. Our school is a "last chance" for a traditional high school diploma, and our students are at high risk of dropping out altogether. I want to prevent that from happening!
I want to hook my students into education with engaging materials that will inspire them and increase their skills. My students, age 16-19, frequently read at an elementary school level. My students find a wide range of topics interesting, but especially seem to enjoy stories of people that they can relate to; people who have struggled as they have.
Malcolm X: A Graphic Biography will appeal to my students on several levels. Students find Malcolm X to be an interesting, inspiring historical figure, but they don't necessarily know a lot about him or his life. This book will be an excellent resource to learn about Malcolm X's life, African American history, the Civil Rights era, empowerment, and political movements. We will read the book aloud in class, so that students can learn from the material through both seeing and hearing. The graphic (comic book) format of the book will appeal to students because of the short blocks of text and the interesting illustrated images. The book's subject and format will help engage my students who say that they don't like to read. I also hope that for some students, Malcolm X's message about self-respect, education, and empowerment will inspire students in how they live their own lives.
Your donation in support of a class set of Malcolm X: A Graphic Biography for my classroom will help excite students who have been alienated from their education and make them feel excited about reading! Thank you so much for your support.
My students need a class set of 30 copies of the book Malcolm X: A Graphic Biography.

Dear DJ Ron/Sekou/Thai-An, Julia, Janet, Kelly and Courtney,
Thank you so much for your generosity! I am so excited about getting the Malcolm X graphic novel into my students' hands! I believe that your gift will truly be inspiring to them, and hopefully promote a love of reading in general, and of nonfiction graphic novels and biographies in particular. It is so wonderful for my students to know how many people like you, who are not necessarily a part of our school community, care about them and their education. Your generosity is a model for them as they become adults, and hopefully they'll give donations to kids at other schools just like theirs. Thank you again, and we look forward to receiving the materials!

"I gave to this project because... I loved reading about Malcolm X. I hope after you read this one you will read his Autobiography also. He fought amazing odds to become a great leader and peacemaker. I can't wait to hear from your teacher about the amazing things YOU will do. Believe in yourselves because I know Ms. Friel sure does!
