Mrs. c. Glenview Middle School
East Moline, IL Grades 6-8

I currently teach 8th grade Physical Science at a middle school of approximately 1,200 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Over 50% of of the student population are eligible for free or reduced breakfast and lunch. Of the 150 students I teach daily, 15% have special needs.

Because local and state funding is limited, teaching to the state and federal standards is becoming increasingly difficult. Student needs are greater, and the need for "hands-on" materials is necessary for today's learners.

My students need DC motors, and the cm. cubes (along with other easier to obtain materials) to build their "Great American Fan Cars". The Great American Fan Car Race incorporates students knowledge of design and physics with their love for competition. Each student would receive materials including a motor, propeller, straws, tongue depressor, wheels, axles, cubes, and rubber bands to complete a functional car ready to race against their classmates.

The Great American Fan Car Race is a culminating activity that incorporates the principles of force and motion, electricity, and simple machines which are covered the first semester of the school year. Providing a "hands-on" approach to incorporate these abstract scientific principles with the real world, encourages and enables students to make the connections.
