Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second-year teacher of government and economics at a large, comprehensive school in a high-need community in central California. Our school is brand new; we graduated our first senior class this year. Because we are a new school, we lack many resources and facilities of a newer school. For example, the two computers labs in the library contain 70 computers that must serve 1,700 students. The majority of our students (93%) are Latino, and nearly 70% are English Language Learners. Over 60% of our students are low-income and quality for federal assistance. Many of my students are the children of migrant farm-workers and will be the first in their families to graduate from high school. Despite these challenges, many of our seniors have achieved their dream of attending a four year university or community college.
Last semester my students studied the Iraq War and the War on Terror. They came alive with interest in these important subjects. They hungered to find answers to their questions and to understand the roots of these conflicts. As a teacher, I struggled to find the right resources to shed light on the complexities of these topics. I turned to A Young People's History of the U.S., a history book written for teenagers by the renowned historian Howard Zinn. I made a class copy of the chapter on the War on Terror and discovered that this book is perfect for young people. The writing is simple, clear, and very informative. It raises the bar for reasoning and logic. My students responded enthusiastically, and several told me that they had never before read and understood a book like Zinn's.
I want to continue to open eyes and inspire young minds by having a class set of 40 copies of A Young People's History of the United States, Vol. 2. A classroom set dedicated to my students will allow us to dive into the historical roots of our modern political and economic systems. This project will allow my students to have access to an important resource, a resource that they have a proven desire for and benefit from. read and learn from. Using Zinn's book in our classroom will help prepare my students for the rigors of higher education and will help supplement the textbook that we currently use.
I have found the perfect text for my students. It is interesting, relevant, and appropriate for their specific needs. A Young People's History is immensely more useful than the second-hand, 12-year old textbook that my school district has provided our students. By supporting this proposal you will enable my students to feel the power of historical knowledge, and you will help my students become informed and responsible citizens. Your support will inspire interest and engagement in my classroom.
