Shining a Light on World Cultures and Geography

My students need an LCD projector to learn about world cultures and geography in an interactive way. An LCD projector will enable us to study interactive maps and watch video clips and Powerpoint presentations on world cultures.

I have the great responsibility--and even greater joy--of teaching world cultures and geography to the 7th graders in one of Maryland's Title I middle schools. It is my intention, and will also be my students' intentions, for them to master 90% of the content that I teach, as well as improve their literacy skills.

Our school has limited technological resources. I already incorporate technology whenever possible, and would like to take my technology-integration to the next level by using educational video clips, interactive maps and PowerPoint presentations (I also created a web page and will begin posting podcasts of social studies content). Because our textbooks do not directly correlate with the curriculum, I will need to supplement its information with additional instruction.

An LCD projector will enable me to frequently teach geography by using large, color maps that I can mark on the computer and project on the screen, an activity not afforded by traditional pull-down maps. Such a projector will enable me to show PowerPoint presentations that infuse music and video relevant to our topic of study, therefore engaging students by appealing to different modalities. The projector will enable me to teach students how to access the web resources that I have created for them, and will empower students to showcase PowerPoint presentations that they will create themselves. Having worked with LCD projectors in past, I can assure you that the succinct presentation and clear, readable print promotes student learning and is especially critical for my students with special needs.

Your donation will ensure that my students have a resource they need to make dramatic academic gains this year. In addition to helping them learn social studies content, you will be helping them learn technology and literacy skills. Furthermore, your generosity speaks volumes to my students; in a community that sometimes seems so hostile and hopeless, your attention to my students' academic success proves to them that people beyond our school community care about them and expect them to do well. I promise that my students will be grateful for the LCD projector, and even more importantly, for the opportunity to access knowledge in the way that their peers in neighboring suburban school districts can. This is your opportunity to influence--positively-- the educations of students you will never meet.
