Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our school of 1,100 students is a busy metropolis of its own within a large city. I teach one of the four wonderful sixth grade classes of 33 students. We are a "salad bowl" of families from all over the world with 23 languages spoken here.

Last year the students bought their own books of "Chasing Vermeer" from me to use in the beginning of the year before "Guided Reading" officially begins. I purchased the books on line during the summer and this way I was sure each child would have a copy. The reason I worked so hard to get the books was that our city's art museum has a student trip which is based on the book. It sounded like fun and the trip inspired the students to read this mystery so they could attend the museum visit. It was a complete success from every angle. The students enjoyed the book, learned about art, visited the museum where the tour guide commented on how much the children knew about Vermeer and his work.

The children were permitted to keep the books from last year. As a result, the supply must be replenished. I thought that if hardcover copies could be purchased, that this reading event and art museum visit could start several years off to a fantastic start.

You can light the fire of literacy as well as surround them with exposure to the arts by making these books available not just for this class but also for future classes. Due to the 77% poverty level of our school population, many of the books from last year were given without being compensated. It is much more important that the students are inspired to enjoy reading and develop a love of fine art. I cannot afford such luxury this year, so please help us.
