The Show Must Go On!

My students need 20 three ring binders, 40 divider sets, 10 packs of post-its, and 2 packs of highlighters.

Ms. L.
Grades 9-12

This fall I will be a brand new teacher teaching tenth and eleventh graders a subject that is not brought up very often - Stage Management for Live Theater. This is a subject that requires a lot of attention to detail and organization. As a new teacher and with the recent budget cuts in my district, I was worried that I was not going to be able to provide my students with the appropriate materials they would need to become the best Stage Managers that they could. When I heard about DonorsChoose I was thrilled because I thought there might be hope for my students to get the materials they need.

In any theater production the audience only sees the actors on the stage. Little do they know that there is an entire workforce behind the actors making sure that the show goes on without a hitch. The most essential part of this buzzing city behind the scenes is the Stage Manager. Without the Stage Manager, the lights would not be turned on, the sound would remain off, the dressing rooms would all be locked and the props would sitting on a table waiting for the scene to come that they appear in. The most important thing a Stage Manager could have is their Prompt Book. This book holds all the information about the production. It holds the cues for lighting and sound. It holds all information about the actors and everyone on the crew. It holds the calender for the production and every person's contact information. It holds budget forms, emergency cards, notes, sometimes three different versions of the script. This book is the "bible" of theaters.

My students will need binders, highlighters, dividers, and post-it tabs to be used in their prompt books. The supplies are necessary for the organization of a prompt book. Without the dividers for the binder the script, the contact sheets, the set plot, the budgets, everything about the show would all be in one binder and it would be impossible to find anything. The post-its are good for marking line notes in the script for the actors. They also help when cueing a show. It makes it easier for the Stage Manager to call the cue if the different departments are color coded. Post-its also work for times when you need to make a note for yourself in the book. We need highlighters because we need to mark specific things in scripts, like when we make a preliminary prop list, we go through the script and make all the props that are already written in the script. We use this as a starting point for our final prop list. And as for the binders, without a binder our books would not be books at all. They would be jumbled pieces of paper that had no organization. And that is the key to Stage Management - organization. Without it, everyone would be lost.

I graduated from Orange County High School of the Arts (OCHSA) in 2004. After that I decided that I wanted to be a Stage Manager. OCHSA showed me that I wanted to be in this field, without it I feel that I would be another college graduate waiting tables somewhere. I want to give back to the school that gave me so much, they gave me a place that I could be myself. A place where no one cared what you looked like as long as you made art and loved every second of it. I want to teach my students the joys of being a Stage Manager and the joy of being able to give back. Hopefully they will take what they learn from me and make it into something they can be proud of.
