Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach high school chemistry, grades 10, 11, 12, and I have 150 students. This academic course provides students with a curriculum in general chemistry. This comprehensive view will give students an understanding of the concepts and principles of chemistry based on content standards. This course will provide opportunities to develop laboratory skills, problem solving, and technological skills necessary to compete successfully in the new millennium. I want my students to conduct a laboratory experiment in electrochemistry, specifically, the process of electroplating a metal key with copper. This experiment will demonstrate how examples of electroplating (iron cans with tin, iron car bumpers with chrome, iron products with zinc, and jewelry plated with silver or gold) can be seen constantly in the pursuit of our daily lives. In order to conduct an experiment in electroplating (the plating of a brass, iron or steel key with copper), the copper-strip anode and cathode (key) should be weighed to an accuracy of 0.001 g. An analytical balance with this intermediate range of 0.001 g (between 0.01 g and 0.0001 g) can provide this accuracy. This balance could also be used in other laboratory experiments during the academic year. Students will also be required to demonstrate knowledge of what they have already studied prior to this experiment in electrochemistry; 1) the mole, 2) the mathematics of chemical equations, and 3) reactions involving oxidation and reduction. Your help will make it possible for my students to visualize a possible future career in some aspect of the plating industry. Thank you for considering this proposal.
