Shining Like a Star

My little actors (elementary students acting and singing in performances) need 2 par can lighting systems in order to be seen by parents during performances in the school gym.

"That's my kid!" "This is amazing!" "I can't wait to show this video to ________!" "You looked great!"

Phrases every kid wants to hear their parent say as they perform? Of course it is! I teach third grade at a school in a high-need community. Each year students have opportunities to perform in front of their peers and families. Sometimes as a class and sometimes after auditioning for a part. Everyone can be involved. Many times, the students who have difficulties academically or behaviorally are the very students who are drawn to either take an active role on stage or work behind the scenes. I direct a kindergarten through third grade Christmas program which is always amazing! I have codirected musicals with another teacher and the kids always knock the socks off anyone who comes to see them perform. But that's part of the problem. Sometimes you can't see them because the lighting is so bad. There are dark spots on the stage and anything in front of the stage is shadowed. Hard to see and hard to be seen.

Now picture this: the gym lights go off, the stage is set and the par can lights (run by a capable and serious student lighting director) illuminate a show filled with the talents and enthusiasm of children. Children who are inspired by hearing their parents say, "That's my kid!" It is a show that is relived every time a parent or grandparent brings out the videos or photos that clearly and beautifully give life to past performances. It's a show that inspired students in the audience to audition next year. It's a show that felt so professional, it gave a new sense of pride to those who had self-doubts.

You can make it possible for students performing at my school to have their efforts and talents seen and celebrated in a way that makes them feel like a star! Please reward their efforts and give them the opportunity to shine!
