Spread Some Spirit Into Literacy for my First Grade Students

My students need 5 copies of 8 different children's books, as well as a variety of puppets and puzzles to enhance their take-home literacy bags that they will receive monthly.

One primary goal in my classroom is that I give my students the gift of wonderful places that reading can take them! I am constantly trying to implement ideas and programs in my classroom to achieve this goal. I teach 1st grade in a Title 1 school where over 50% of the students are on free lunch. I love my job more than words can say. I want my students to enjoy the same passion for literacy that I do. I believe my literacy bag project is one step in helping to do so.

Besides being a Title 1 school, we are about to face the toughest year yet in my career. Due to severe budget cuts in the state of Florida, I am receiving $30 in funds for the year. I do not want this to stop me from implementing this literacy bag program into my classroom. I feel that this program presents a wonderful opportunity for my students and parents. It seems increasingly evident that parents and students are lacking the time and connection at home that is so important to their education and relationship. I hope to bridge that gap with my monthly literacy bags. There will be activities that require parents and students to work together to problem solve and to merely enjoy each other's company.

For the take-home literacy bag program to be implemented in my classroom, I need several different types of children's literature to send home monthly. Along with the literature will be activities based on theme to complete. I also need a variety of materials to enhance the literacy bags, such as puzzles and puppets, in order to make the bags as interesting, yet educational, as possible. I strongly feel that this program will help my students, who are disadvantaged, grow a deep-rooted love for reading. I also believe it will help them show a lot of growth in reading, as well. Another important aspect of this program that I hope my students gain is a closer parent-child connection at home. All of these aspects combined will help my students reap the benefits of reading!

Thank you for your consideration. This is the beginning of creating a positive lifetime journey. Your help will give my students the greatest gift of all - an endless love for literacy!
