"I teach 4th grade children who have been identified as gifted in an urban school system in Alabama. These children come from 15 different area schools, a majority being Title I schools, and see me only one day a week for four hours. Those few hours they see me are often an oasis away from their daily lives.

What materials we are able to purchase come from our pupil supply allocation, which is often spent to cover cost of testing supplies to identify children in the gifted area and this year this allocation has been cut.

My project is called "Teach Me about Our Past." My students need 10 NIKON COOLPIX L11 DIGITAL CAMERAS to document the history of Birmingham. Students will interview and photograph city leaders, elders, and historical places throughout the City of Birmingham. Through the conceptual lenses of culture, conflict, and identify, students will learn about how Birmingham, Alabama came to be where it is located, study it’s growth, and examine the conflicts and challenges of the Civil Rights Era.

Students will demonstrate their knowledge through the use of digital storytelling. History to students has many important benefits. History provides identity. Studying history improves our decision making and judgment. History shows us models of good and responsible citizenship. History also teaches us how to learn from the mistakes of others. History helps us understand change and societal development. History provides us a context from which to understand ourselves and others. By funding this project, you will make it possible for my students to have technology resources that would not be normally available to them while being able to learn about an important era in their history.
