I teach 3 classes of chemistry and 4 classes of biology. Our small inner-city charter high school is frequently strapped for funding, but our students are worth even more pennies than we give them! The kids go to core classes in the mornings, and study performing arts in the afternoons.

My school's students are students who have interests/talent in the performing arts, but that doesn't mean that they shouldn't enjoy/ have a future science too! We also have a high percentage (70%) of girls who I'd like to encourage to get interested in science. However, as we all know, interest comes from inquiry, and genuine hands-on experiences, and activity is the best way to learn science! These labs will be just the thing for our classes to get started this year, and get the kids involved from the start.

The first lab we're requesting is a coleus lab, where my biology students will be able to plant and grow their own coleus seeds and observe genetic differences/ mathematical relationships between the different traits (not to mention lessons on horticulture!). The second biology lab, a minipond, will help us make living microscope slides with protozoans, plants, and other microscopic critters. We'll learn about environmental topics and ecology too! For my chemistry students, there are two food-related labs: Kitchen Chem - The Chemistry of Candy, where they'll actually get to make and study candies, and a "Where's the Fat?" fat extraction kit, where each student will be able to extract the fat from their favorite snack, and compare their results to the back of the packages.

We need you to help inspire these young women and men to see that science is fun, active, and inspiring! The more experiments they are able to do, the more they will remember that IT IS possible to be interested in chemistry and biology! It is so important that this new generation be inspired in this way... many of them may be the doctors, pharmacists, and researchers of the future! Thank you so much.
