Rockin' Recess!!!

My students need materials for recess, including a recess bag that contains footballs, basketballs, kickballs, a soccerball, frisbees, jump ropes, and skip-it loops, flag football belts (enough for 36 students in case some are lost or broken) and a kit that has directions and diagrams for indoor and outdoor recess games.

I am a 5th grade teacher who be will working in a small, rural school. This fall, I will be teaching 22 students with varying levels of academic and athletic abilities. Since they are 5th graders, I am sure that they will be quite active.

In our state, 5th grade is considered a "Gateway" year. This means the students are tested in Reading, Math, and Science at the end of the school year. They are required to pass all three subjects in order to pass the grade level. We spend our time in class working to our fullest potential in order to assure that they have mastered all required skills. Despite the large amount of time spent doing academic work, they do not have a PE rotation each day. In order to meet their needs for physical activity, we have built in a 30 minute recess period each day. While this helpful, it only goes so far when the equipment we have is limited. Schools are faced with decreasing budgets and recess materials are low on the priority list when compared to books and classroom supplies. As you can see from my proposal, durable recess materials are quite costly and not something many teachers have.

In order to meet this need for my students, I have requested several items. First is a basic class recess kit. In it there are playground balls, footballs, a soccer ball, jump ropes, and Frisbees. These are all color coded and stored in a mesh bag that will be easy for the students to carry. In addition, I have asked for flag football belts. These can be used for many games such as Capture the Flag, Capture and Release, and others. Finally, I requested an activity box. This box contains cards with diagrams and instructions for games that can be taught and played using these basic materials. The box also has ideas for team building games and indoor games that can be used in the classroom on rainy days. I feel that with these materials, I will have durable and safe equipment that will enable my students to enjoy their recess time and not feel that they are limited in their supplies. These items will enable us to do games in small groups, as well as a whole class.

It is impossible for active 10 year old children to sit still all day and learn the things required of them. They need time to play and exercise. As we see growing numbers of obese children, this is even more evident. Time is extremely valuable in a school setting and we have dedicated 30 minutes each day to physical activity. I need your help to ensure that my students have equipment to use during this time. This "brain break" will allow them to return to the classroom energized and ready for the remainder of the school day.
